چکیده

Morphonotactic clusters are defined as combinations of phonemes across morpheme boundaries. As they are cognitively processed faster and acquired earlier than phonotactic clusters, it is hypothesised that in speech production, morphonotactic clusters are more robust and highlighted than phonotactic clusters. The aim of this study was to compare homophonous phonotactic and morphonotactic consonant clusters. Homophonous target words produced in semi-spontaneous speech of 16 Standard Austrian German speakers were analysed. Word-final morphonotactic and phonotactic consonant clusters were analysed with respect to relative duration and intensity of both the clusters and the cluster-final /t/. Additionally, closure duration of the final-/t/ and the intensity of the burst were measured. Contrary to the assumption, a global comparison of the clusters revealed no difference in the relative duration of morphonotactic clusters as compared to the phonotactic counterparts. Likewise, concerning the word-final /t/ no differences between phonotactic and morphonotactic clusters occurred. Unexpectedly, genderand age-specific differences arose, independent of the phonotactic / morphonotactic distinction of the clusters.

Word-final (mor-)phonotactic consonant clusters in standard Austrian German

Morphonotactic consonant clusters originate through morphological operations and are mostly combinations of consonants across morpheme boundaries. As they are processed faster and acquired earlier than phonotactic clusters, it is hypothesised that in speech production, morphonotactic clusters are more robust and highlighted than phonotactic clusters. The present study pursues two goals: it exam...

English word-medial morphonotactics: A corpus study

The paper reports on an investigation of wordmedial consonant clusters in English. Medial clusters are further subdivided into phonotactic ones, i.e. intramorphemic, and morphonotactic ones, which are morphologically complex – arising as a result of derivation or compounding. In this study we concentrate on morphonotactic clusters. We put forward the following hypothesis: since compounds may ul...

Pre-final version: Durational correlates for differentiating consonant sequences in Russian 1 Durational correlates for differentiating consonant sequences in Russian

In Russian, the same consonant sequences are permitted in various phonotactic environments. The presence of a word boundary or reduced vowel can be phonologically contrastive, and both learners and experienced listeners may rely on fine acoustic cues to discriminate between phonotactic possibilities. In this study, durational characteristics of consonant sequences are examined to establish whet...

The effect of phonotactic constraints in German-speaking children with delayed phonological acquisition: Evidence from production of word-initial consonant clusters

In this study the effect of phonotactic constraints concerning word-initial consonant clusters in children with delayed phonological acquisition was explored. Twelve German-speaking children took part (mean age 5;1). The spontaneous speech of all children was characterized by the regular appearance of the error patterns fronting, e.g., Kuh ‘‘cow’’ /ku:/ ! [tu:], or stopping, e.g., Schaf ‘‘sheep...

Optimality Theoretic Account of Acquisition of Consonant Clusters of English Syllables by Persian EFL Learners*

This study accounts for the acquisition of the consonant clusters of English syllable structures both in onset and coda positions by Persian EFL learners. Persian syllable structure is "CV(CC)", composed of one consonant at the initial position and two optional consonants at the final position; whereas English syllable structure is "(CCC)V(CCCC)". Therefore, Persian EFL learners need to resolve...
